Reclaiming Our Essence: How to Stay Rooted in Humanity in the Age of AI
In an era where the digital pulse quickens daily, we often find ourselves navigating a curious dichotomy. One world, meticulously crafted by machines, hums with algorithms, automation, and artificial intelligence, silently shaping every interaction, headline, and swipe. It’s a realm of incredible efficiency and boundless information. Yet, paralleled to this technological marvel is another world – one deeply rooted in our innate humanity. This is the world that resonates with the quiet beat of our hearts, the instinctive rhythm of our breath, and the profound knowing held within our very bones. In the relentless pursuit of keeping pace with the former, it’s increasingly easy to lose touch with the profound wisdom of the latter.
It is precisely for this reason that I sought the insights of my dear friend, Tori Gordon, and invited her to share her profound wisdom on this essential topic. Tori is a person whose counsel I deeply value, someone I trust with my most tender truths. She embodies the essence of a spiritual doula, a soul whisperer, and a fierce advocate for what it truly means to be human in today’s complex landscape.
At a time when advanced machines are learning to perfectly mimic our voices and sophisticated algorithms are masterfully designed to capture our every fleeting attention, Tori stands as a beacon. She gently, yet powerfully, reminds us how to turn our gaze inward, to listen to the subtle cues of our inner selves. Her guidance is a journey back home – not merely to the confines of our physical bodies, but to our inherent presence, our deep-seated peace, and our vibrant aliveness.
Just last weekend, I had the privilege of sitting with Tori as she helped me meticulously untangle a persistent knot I had carried in my chest for over a year. There was no attempt to hastily fix it, nor any pressure to rush through the discomfort. Instead, she remained steadfast, fully present, and utterly unshaken. Her presence was a profound reminder that it was entirely permissible to feel precisely what I was feeling, without any obligation to explain, apologize, or maintain a facade of composure. In that tranquil space, imbued with her unwavering support, I felt safe enough to finally release my guard. Safe enough to truly let go.
Tori’s impactful work is not a stance against artificial intelligence; rather, it is a resounding affirmation of humanity. It serves as a vital reminder that while machines undoubtedly grow smarter with each passing day, our bodies and our spirits are already imbued with an ancient, profound wisdom that no algorithm can replicate. No sophisticated code can ever truly replace the intricate intelligence of your nervous system, the raw, transformative medicine found in your grief, or the sacred, boundless holiness of your joy. Her message is clear: true wisdom often lies beyond the digital frontier, residing within the very fabric of our being.
With love and reverence,

How to Stay Human in a Rapidly Evolving World
By: Tori Gordon
Navigating the Modern Predicament: Disconnection in an Accelerated Age
We are living through a period of unprecedented acceleration, a time marked by dizzying technological advancements. The pace at which technology evolves far outstrips our biological capacity to adapt, leaving our nervous systems perpetually overstimulated, our calendars overflowing, and our precious attention constantly under siege. Artificial intelligence now drafts our emails, curates our social media feeds, and even attempts to answer our deepest questions about life, love, and meaning. In many respects, we have never been more ‘connected’ through digital networks, and yet, paradoxically, countless individuals report feeling more profoundly disconnected than ever before.
This pervasive disconnection manifests in various forms: a growing distance from our own bodies, a blurring of our personal truths, an estrangement from each other, and often, a sense of separation from our spiritual core. The constant influx of information and the pressure to perform in a digitally optimized world can make us feel like we’re adrift, losing our anchors in the very human experience. The noise of modern life is deafening, making it difficult to hear the subtle yet vital whispers of our soul.
However, beneath all the clamor and digital static of contemporary existence, there resides a quiet knowing. It’s an intuitive wisdom, a gentle whisper in our bones, an undeniable call to return home to ourselves. This inherent longing for authenticity and genuine connection is the very essence of my work, aptly titled How to Stay Human. It’s an exploration of grounding ourselves amidst the storm, finding stillness within the chaos, and remembering our intrinsic worth beyond external metrics.
Embracing the Call: What How to Stay Human Represents
My work is more than just a concept; it is a burgeoning movement, a vital message, a gentle reminder, and a quiet yet potent form of resistance. This isn’t a resistance against progress itself, but rather against the profound forgetting of who we truly are. It’s not a stance against the advancements of AI, but a protective measure against the abandonment of our very souls. It’s not about opposing change, but about consciously questioning the true cost of trading our invaluable humanity for superficial efficiency, sacrificing our sacred embodiment for fleeting performance, and exchanging our inherent sacredness for mere speed.
I firmly believe that we are currently being invited into a great, overdue reunion. This is a reunion of the body and the spirit, of the masculine and feminine energies within us, of truth and tenderness, and ultimately, a reconnection between the way we live our lives and the profound reason we are alive in the first place. It’s about synthesizing these often-fragmented aspects of self into a harmonious whole, fostering integration rather than separation. This holistic approach empowers us to live more authentically and purposefully.
For over a decade, I have dedicated myself to studying and facilitating this reunion, guiding countless individuals back to their inherent wisdom. As a trauma-informed coach, a breathwork facilitator, and a spiritual teacher, I’ve had the privilege of helping high-performing leaders, earnest seekers, and sensitive souls alike rediscover how to truly come home to themselves. This journey isn’t achieved through relentless striving, but through radical surrender. It isn’t found in constant performance, but in deep, unwavering presence. And above all, this path to self-reunion is navigated profoundly through the wisdom of the body.
Your Body Remembers: The Unspoken Wisdom Within
Here lies one of the most fundamental truths I’ve learned and teach: your body remembers. Even when your conscious mind may forget, your somatic system holds a vast archive of experiences, emotions, and ancestral wisdom. When you experience feelings of anxiety, overwhelming stress, or a sense of unease, it’s never merely “all in your head.” These sensations are concrete signals transmitted by your nervous system, communicating perceived threats or imbalances throughout your entire being. This manifests in myriad ways: a rapid heart rate, shallow breathing, constricted posture, or a churning in your gut.
These physical manifestations are all integral parts of an ongoing, intricate conversation that your body is continuously having with your soul. It’s a dialogue rich with information, warning signals, and profound insights. However, for most of us, we were never taught the language to truly listen to this vital conversation. Instead, societal norms and upbringing often instructed us to override these internal signals, to numb the discomfort, to dismiss our gut feelings, to distract ourselves from inner turmoil, or even to dissociate from our bodies altogether. We learned to silence the messenger, rather than heed its message.
Understanding this disconnect is crucial. Your body is not just a vessel; it is a sophisticated biological and energetic system constantly relaying crucial data about your internal state and your environment. Ignoring these signals doesn’t make them disappear; it merely pushes them underground, where they can manifest as chronic stress, unexplained pain, or persistent emotional struggles. Re-learning how to tune into this ancient wisdom is a foundational step in reclaiming our humanity.
“Drop In, Don’t Check Out”: A Simple Practice for Profound Connection
It is precisely to address this pervasive lack of inner listening that I developed a simple yet profoundly effective daily practice called “Drop In, Don’t Check Out.” This is a powerful, three-minute ritual, accessible to anyone, designed to help you reconnect with your body and restore a sense of inner safety. It is particularly invaluable during moments of heightened stress, shame, or when you find yourself spiraling into negative thought patterns. This practice creates a vital pause, a micro-reset that can shift your entire state.
Here’s how this transformative practice works, step-by-step:
1. Drop In: Begin by gently closing your eyes, allowing external distractions to fade. Place one hand softly over your heart, and the other over your belly. Take a long, slow, intentional breath, feeling the gentle rise and fall of your chest and abdomen. Consciously let your awareness descend from the busy activity of your mind and settle deeply into your body. With a compassionate and non-judgmental curiosity, ask yourself: “Where am I holding tension?” or “What am I feeling right now?” Resist the urge to analyze or label; simply witness the sensations as they are, without judgment.
2. Stay: The next crucial step is to simply stay with whatever sensation arises, without trying to change or fix it. If you feel tightness, allow it to be tight. If you notice a heaviness, let it simply be heavy. Breathe into this sensation, expanding your awareness around it. Offer yourself these profoundly compassionate words: “This belongs here.” And perhaps even more powerfully: “I don’t have to fix this to love myself.” This radical acceptance is a cornerstone of healing, creating space for authentic self-compassion and allowing the body’s natural wisdom to unfold.
3. Soften: With each exhale, consciously release any clenching you might notice in your jaw, hips, hands, or shoulders. Invite your body to soften, even just 5% more. Imagine your body being gently cradled and fully supported by the earth beneath you. Allow the earth to hold what you no longer need to carry alone, releasing the burden and finding a sense of grounding and ease. This act of softening creates physical and energetic space for healing and release, fostering a deeper connection to both your inner self and the supportive world around you.
That’s the entirety of it: three simple, yet profound steps. Drop in. Stay. Soften. Aim to integrate this practice into your daily routine whenever possible, especially during those moments when life feels overwhelmingly intense or challenging. Consistency amplifies its benefits, transforming it into a powerful anchor.
Beyond Performance: Reclaiming Your Innate Humanity
Staying truly human in this accelerated world isn’t about striving to do more, achieve more, or constantly optimize. On the contrary, it’s about daring to feel more, to be more, and to remember fundamental truths about our existence. It’s about recognizing that your body is not a problem to be fixed or a machine to be perfected; instead, it is a magnificent portal back to unwavering presence and profound wisdom. Your emotions, often dismissed as distractions or inconveniences, are not obstacles to your healing; they *are* your healing, vital messengers guiding you towards deeper understanding and integration. And your vulnerability, frequently misconstrued as weakness, is in fact the most authentic doorway to genuine connection, intimacy, and strength.
I don’t profess to hold all the answers, nor am I here to present myself as a guru or an infallible authority. My journey is simply that of a woman who has walked through the profound valleys of grief and loss, navigated periods of deep rebirth and awakening, and danced intimately with doubt, only to learn to trust again. I stand firm in the unwavering belief that our humanness, in all its messy, glorious complexity, is inherently holy. There is, quite simply, nothing more sacred or more powerful than being fully, vibrantly, and authentically alive.
If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by the relentless pace of the modern world, if you’re weary of the constant pressure for spiritual performance and the pursuit of an elusive perfectionism, or if you simply yearn for something more grounded, more embodied, and profoundly more *real*… then I invite you to come and sit with me.
