Rugged CrossFit: How It’s Redefining Strength Through Antifragility
In a world saturated with gym selfies, meticulously crafted physiques, and the constant pressure to conform to unrealistic ideals, a different kind of strength is emerging. It’s not about the mirrors or the macho posturing. It’s about resilience, community, and a commitment to building a body and mind that can thrive under pressure. This is the essence of what Rugged CrossFit is quietly, yet powerfully, redefining.
My own journey toward understanding this concept began in a rather unexpected place: my living room. Recently, I invested a considerable amount of time and energy into designing what I envisioned as my ultimate sanctuary – a Boho-chic space complete with a plush rug, low coffee table, and an abundance of comfortable floor cushions. The intention was clear: to create a space where I could unwind, meditate, and achieve a state of blissful tranquility. I envisioned myself sipping herbal teas, effortlessly transitioning between work tasks and moments of spiritual reflection, all while radiating an aura of peaceful productivity.
The reality, however, was far less idyllic. On my first attempt to utilize this carefully curated space, I found myself unable to get back up from the floor. After a series of undignified rolls, I landed awkwardly on a dog bed, feeling more like an overturned beetle than an enlightened goddess. It was in that moment of physical frustration that a profound realization struck me: my problems weren’t going to be solved with more throw pillows. What I truly needed was stronger legs, a more stable core, and knees that wouldn’t protest with every movement.
At 52, and with the aspiration of living a long and active life, I realized that I needed to invest in strength that would endure. Not just the superficial strength of sculpted abs and bulging biceps, but the kind of strength that allows you to navigate the challenges of daily life with ease and confidence. The strength that enables you to lift your luggage into an overhead compartment without straining a muscle, and the strength that keeps you steady and upright amidst the chaos of life.
This realization led me to Rugged CrossFit 702, a place that would challenge my preconceived notions about fitness and introduce me to the transformative power of antifragility.

Before you conjure images of me transforming into a CrossFit devotee, let me assure you that I am not someone who naturally gravitates toward intense physical activity. However, my journey is not about aesthetics or attempting to recapture my youth. It’s about cultivating a strength that remains unyielding in the face of adversity. A strength that not only withstands stress but adapts and grows stronger through it – the very essence of antifragility.
Understanding Antifragility
Antifragility goes beyond mere resilience. Resilience implies returning to a baseline state after experiencing a shock or setback. Antifragility, on the other hand, involves emerging from challenging experiences stronger and more capable than before. It is the ability to not just survive stress, but to thrive because of it.
Consider your muscles as a prime example of antifragile systems. They don’t grow by avoiding exertion. They grow because you challenge them. When you lift a heavy weight, your muscle fibers experience microscopic tears. In response, your body repairs and rebuilds these fibers, making them stronger and more resilient. This same principle applies to your nervous system, your immune system, and even your emotional capacity.
Embracing antifragility requires stepping outside of your comfort zone and embracing a certain level of discomfort. This isn’t about pushing yourself to the point of injury or engaging in unhealthy “grind culture,” but rather creating an environment of healthy friction that stimulates adaptation and growth. This process is often devoid of immediate rewards or accolades. However, the long-term benefits of prioritizing practices like adequate protein intake and addressing emotional burdens are immeasurable.
Antifragility is not about attaining invincibility. It’s about becoming more adaptable and flexible, capable of bending without breaking. And when you do break, it’s about learning from the experience, rebuilding yourself stronger, and emerging with a greater understanding of yourself and the world around you.
It’s important to remember that embracing antifragility doesn’t mean you’re immune to vulnerability. It means accepting that vulnerability is a part of the human experience and not fearing it. There will be times when you falter, when you need to rest and recalibrate. But with an antifragile mindset, you can approach these challenges with a sense of self-compassion and a commitment to emerging stronger and wiser.
Antifragility vs. Toxic Masculinity: A Crucial Distinction
It’s important to draw a clear distinction between antifragility and the harmful concept of “tough guy energy,” often associated with toxic masculinity. In fact, they are fundamentally opposed. Toxic masculinity promotes a rigid, inflexible, and emotionally repressed form of strength.
Toxic masculinity glorifies a brittle kind of strength that is performative and terrified of softness. It’s the emotional equivalent of skipping leg day – superficially impressive but ultimately unsustainable when faced with real-life challenges. It’s a societal construct that conditions us to equate vulnerability with weakness.
Antifragility, in contrast, embraces softness and vulnerability where appropriate, while simultaneously cultivating strength where it truly matters. It acknowledges that it’s okay to rest, to cry, to ask for help. It empowers you to rise from adversity, both physically and emotionally, and to continue moving forward.
True strength, rooted in antifragility, doesn’t need to prove itself. It manifests naturally through action and resilience.
This brings us back to Rugged CrossFit 702, a place that embodies the true essence of antifragility.
Experiencing Antifragility in Action at Rugged CrossFit
Walking into Rugged CrossFit for the first time, I anticipated feeling out of place and self-conscious. However, my expectations were quickly shattered. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with open arms and treated as if I had been a member for years. Coach Candi provided a comprehensive overview of the workout, ensuring that beginner-friendly modifications were available. She offered personalized guidance and support, creating an encouraging and non-judgmental environment.
The atmosphere at Rugged CrossFit was focused, supportive, and refreshingly down-to-earth. Even trainers who weren’t actively coaching took the time to connect with members, fostering a sense of community. It became clear that Rugged CrossFit was more than just a gym; it was a family.
After my initial class, I had the opportunity to speak with Mike Miller, the owner of Rugged CrossFit. He shared the story of how the gym came to be, beginning with his own experience of breaking his hand while training for American Ninja Warrior. Realizing that he needed to pivot, he and his girlfriend Mandi became members of Rugged CrossFit and immediately recognized its unique and welcoming atmosphere.
When the gym became available for sale, Mike seized the opportunity to take ownership. Since then, he and Mandi have invested in upgrading the facilities, adding new equipment, and creating a 24-hour open gym. They also introduced “Shit Storm Sundays,” a workout that lives up to its name in terms of intensity. But what truly sets Rugged CrossFit apart is its focus on people and community.
Mike emphasized that Rugged CrossFit is a place where people from all walks of life can come together and support one another. There are no cliques, no egos, just individuals working towards common goals. From parents with young children to seasoned athletes, everyone is treated with respect and acceptance.
Mike’s vision for Rugged CrossFit is centered on longevity and functional fitness. He wants to help people move well and maintain their physical capabilities well into their 60s and beyond. He believes that fitness is about more than just lifting weights; it’s about being able to enjoy life to the fullest, whether it’s playing with your grandchildren or pursuing your passions.
What struck me most about Rugged CrossFit was how deeply it embodied the principles of antifragility. It’s not just about building physical strength, but about cultivating emotional resilience, fostering accountability, and supporting one another’s growth, both inside and outside the gym.
At Rugged CrossFit, there are no mirrors and no one is flexing for social media. The focus is on presence, genuine connection, and a commitment to personal growth. It’s a place where people show up, push their limits, and support each other through the challenges. Because true strength isn’t about how much you can lift or how fast you can run; it’s about how well you rebuild, how often you rise, and how gracefully you navigate the journey of life, regardless of age.
Rugged CrossFit has shown me that strength doesn’t have to be defined by stoicism and intensity. It can be compassionate, collaborative, and even fun.
While I may never fully embrace burpees, I have come to appreciate the transformative power of this type of training, not just for the body, but for the mind.
The goal is not to be tough, but to be antifragile.
