Delicious Mummy Halloweenies Recipe for Halloween Parties

Food blogger Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman), Elise Bauer of Simply Recipes, and the author at a Chicago event

My dear friend Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman), Elise Bauer (SimplyRecipes.com), and me in Chicago about 8 years ago!

Over a decade of delving into the vibrant world of food blogging has brought countless culinary adventures, but more importantly, it has gifted me some of the most cherished friendships imaginable – true kindred spirits who share a passion for all things food and life. Among these wonderful connections is the incomparable Ree Drummond, famously known as The Pioneer Woman. Ree and I have shared some truly unforgettable moments, from spontaneous barefoot dashes through a Seattle museum to cozy, laughter-filled spooning sessions in a Chicago cab. We even celebrated my son’s birthday at her beautiful Oklahoma ranch, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Our bond, forged over shared recipes and life’s delightful chaos, continues to be a source of joy and inspiration.

It’s this spirit of togetherness and the joy of simple, delicious food that perfectly embodies today’s featured recipe: Mummy Halloweenies. These adorable and incredibly easy-to-make treats are an absolute hit, especially around the Halloween season. They bring a touch of playful spookiness to any gathering, making them ideal for kids and adults alike. There’s something inherently charming about a hot dog wrapped to resemble a tiny, edible mummy, and the best part is how effortlessly they come together. We’re planning to take a batch to the boys’ Taekwondo class tonight, and I can already imagine the smiles and happy munching!

It’s a fantastic tradition worth adopting, and think of the new recipes she could add to her repertoire!)

These “Mummy Halloweenies” are genuinely one of the most adorable and appealing snacks you can whip up for Halloween. Their charm lies in their simplicity and visual impact, instantly becoming the star of any party platter. The beauty of this recipe is its minimal time commitment – it requires just 10 minutes of hands-on preparation, followed by a quick 15 minutes in the oven. This makes them an absolute lifesaver for busy parents or anyone needing a last-minute, crowd-pleasing treat that still feels special and festive.

While Ree, with her admirable culinary prowess, often crafts her dough from scratch, I sometimes embrace a more practical approach, especially when time is of the essence. Confession: I don’t even own a proper rolling pin! So, for this recipe, I happily opted for the convenience of a can of prepared dough. This small shortcut doesn’t diminish the fun or the deliciousness of the end result; in fact, it makes the process even more accessible for everyone. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or a kitchen novice, these Mummy Halloweenies are designed for success, delivering maximum charm with minimum fuss.

Perfectly baked Mummy Halloweenies with mustard eyes

Mummy Halloweenies

From The Pioneer Woman Cooks: A Year of Holidays cookbook. This recipe uses prepared French bread dough (yields 12 mummies) for convenience. You can also use prepared biscuit dough, pie dough, pizza dough, or croissant dough. I used one 11-ounce can of Pillsbury French bread dough. If opting for smaller croissant or biscuit dough cans, you’ll likely need two. Serve these delightful Mummy Halloweenies with small dipping bowls of your favorite mustard, ketchup, or BBQ sauce for a customizable treat.

Ingredients

  • 12 hot dogs
  • 1-2 cans prepared dough (French bread, biscuit, pie, pizza, or croissant dough)
  • 1 egg
  • Mustard or ketchup for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Roll out the prepared dough very thinly on a lightly floured surface. Using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, cut the dough into skinny strips, approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide. Carefully wrap each hot dog with these dough strips, starting from one end and working your way down. Be sure to leave a small gap around where the “face” of the mummy will be. Continue wrapping in a crisscross pattern until the hot dog is mostly covered, resembling bandages. Tuck the end of the dough strip underneath the hot dog to prevent it from unraveling during baking. Repeat this process for all 12 hot dogs. Place the wrapped hot dogs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk the egg with 1 tablespoon of water to create an egg wash. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush this glaze evenly over the top of each mummy dog. This will help them achieve a beautiful golden-brown color and a slightly crisp texture.
  4. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the dough is puffed, cooked through, and has turned a lovely golden brown. Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your oven and the type of dough used, so keep an eye on them.
  5. Once baked, remove the Mummy Halloweenies from the oven. Before serving, use a toothpick or a small squeeze bottle to dot two small “eyes” onto each mummy with mustard or ketchup in the uncovered “face” area. Serve warm with extra dipping sauces on the side.
